Capturing something like this on a wedding video is very special and memorable. At Hitched Films we decided we needed to share the story behind this unique moment with you all.
When we met Jane & Adam for their pre-wedding consultation, we realised that Adam was from Christchurch, New Zealand. Naturally we asked him if he had anyone making the 18,900km journey from Christchurch to Dublin. “Some family and friends”, he said.
“Any chance of a Haka?” I asked him playfully. “Maybe… I’m not sure.” replied Adam. And that was where we left it. Thankfully his Best Man Johnny Aranga stood back from his chair during his speech and launched into what I can only describe as the most intense, yet intimate, show of affection for a newly married couple we’ve seen to date. The floor literally shook.
Johnny and Adam grew up together playing rugby at Catholic Cathedral College (aka Triple C) in Christchurch, and Johnny would be well known for leading the high schools Haka, and we can see why.
Clearly performing the Haka meant a lot to all involved, the couple, family and friends. Johnny represented all those friends back home in New Zealand, showing great respect and courage.. As he mentions just before he starts the Haka, “…it is the ultimate tribute, to our brothers, from our brothers. And Adam even though it is just me here today – this is from all of us.”
The Haka itself, according to Johnny, was written for his rugby team by a Maori teacher at Catholic Cathedral College. The name of the Haka is "Aranga te Huk", and the English subtitles in the video are a loose interpretation of its meaning from Johnny himself.
Jane & Adam I hope you, your family and friends enjoy this moment for years to come, and thank you for letting Hitched Films be part of your special day.
